Dogs of Madison Square Park
'This is an informal personal project started earlier this year, about the dogs who frequent the small run in this particular corner of Manhattan. Dogs in New York are possibly the most varied, best-looking and best-cared for pets in the world. For an area with limited open space, the variety of shapes and sizes you see is amazing. The public dog run allows dogs to socialise, but also it breaks down social barriers between people. As in any big city, people often won't make eye contact in a busy street, but within the dog run, having a dog with you means that you can talk to anyone and they will talk to you.'
All the shots were taken on film, generally Kodak Tri-X and Ilford Delta 100, using Leica M6 and M7 cameras with 35mm and 90mm lenses. They are printed by hand in the darkroom, to give a classic look, reminiscent of the work of photojournalists of the post-war period.
Thanks to all the people and their dogs, who helped with and contributed to this project.
